Program Notes:

"The term "time traveler" refers to a person who travels through time and who can open doors to the past and shortcuts to the future. In this piece, I took myself as the main character of the story and imagined myself living in the future world and the real present world respectively. In the setting of the future world, I remember my past life; in the reality of today's life, I look forward to my future. The Time Traveler is written for solo piano and structured as a variation. Compared to the traditional variation form, this piece presents some new materials and musical textures which we don’t hear at the beginning of each variation, but there is a strong connection between each variation, expressing the different emotions that I experienced during my five years of studying abroad.

 

In the introduction of the piece, I imagine myself as if I were riding in a time spaceship, in which I see my once 18-year-old self arriving in New York City with a longing to begin my study abroad journey. After a short intro, I get off the spaceship and return to the future world (which could be decades from now). In my future world, I start to recall my five-year life abroad, the sweet and sour, the joy, warmth, and gratitude after harvesting growth, as well as the anxiety and frustration when facing difficulties and setbacks. The piece starts from a relaxed, romantic, soothing, and somewhat wandering temperament as the music develops and gradually increases in tension, and the harmonic colors gradually become darker from pure and transparent. At the end of the climax of the piece, I complete my journey through the future world and the time spaceship sends me back to the present day. Now I am also about to complete the final journey of my undergraduate life. The warm, shiny, and determined harmonic colors express my yearning and beautiful vision for the future path of my life.

 

Good times are always fleeting, and we can never predict what will happen today or tomorrow. What we need to do is to cherish every day, every minute, and every second of the present, and spend every stage of our life meaningfully. When we look back, we can still be moved, nostalgic and cheerful about our past experiences. And when we look to the future, we will embrace the whole world with the most positive attitude to meet the new journey ahead!

 

作品简介:

“时间旅行者”指的是在时间中穿梭的人，人类可以打开回到过去的大门和通向未来的捷径。这部作品我将我自己作为故事的主人公，想象着自己分别生活在未来世界和现实的当今世界。在未来世界的设定里，我回忆着我过往的生活；而在现实当今生活中，我更加期待美好的未来。

 

这部作品为钢琴独奏而作，采用变奏曲的形式。与传统变奏曲不同的是，这部作品没每一段变奏都有出现新的材料和音乐语言，但每个变奏之间又有着紧密的联系。每一个段落用不同的情绪表达了我在留学五年时期经历的不同的情感。作品的引子部分，我将自己幻想成我正在乘坐着一艘时光飞船，在飞船上看到了曾经18岁的自己满怀憧憬的来到了纽约，开始我的海外留学之旅。在简短的前奏后，我从时光飞船上下来，回归到了未来世界（可能是几十年后的今天）。在我未来的世界里，我开始回忆自己海外留学五年生活的一点一滴和酸甜苦辣，有收获成长后的喜悦，温暖和感恩，也有在面临困难和挫折时的焦虑与不安。作品从一种轻松，浪漫，舒缓，还有些漫游的气质随着音乐的发展逐渐增加了紧张性，和声的色彩从纯净和透明逐步变得更加的阴暗。在作品高潮结束后，我完成了在未来世界中的穿越，时光飞船把我送回归到了当今的现实世界中。现在的我也即将完成本科阶段最后的旅程。温暖，闪亮而又坚定的和声色彩表达了我对于人生未来之路的向往和美好的憧憬。

 

美好的时光总是短暂的，我们永远无法预测今天，明天会发生什么。我们需要做的是珍惜好当下的每一天，每分每秒，有意义地度过我们人生中的每一个阶段。当我们回首往事的时候，我们依然能够为自己的过去经历所感动，怀念，欢呼。而当我们看向未来的时候，我们会用最积极的态度去迎接未来新的旅程，拥抱整个世界！
