Program Notes:
Being-Toward-Death is inspired by the “Bardo Thodol,” commonly referred to in the West as the “Tibetan Book of the Dead,” written by a Buddhist Master Padmasambhava in the eighth century. The book not only describes the entire
process from death to rebirth, but also specifically explains how to guide the dead (the person who passed away) to obtain the relief from the “Bardo” body (the process from death to rebirth). This masterwork piqued my interest and provoked many complex thoughts, expressed in this work for chamber orchestra.
As a Buddhist, I understand that death is a topic that some people of other faiths find quite taboo; many are not willing to think about death, and when death comes suddenly, people often feel helpless. Thus, it is important for everyone to seriously think about death. I am reminded of the great 20th-century German existentialist philosopher Martin Heidegger, whose philosophy “Being-Toward-Death”(from his famous book, Being and Time); uses the concept of “death” to stimulate our inner desire for "life" and stimulate people's inner vitality. Cherishing every moment of life can prompt us to think more seriously about the future of ourselves and the world. Life is short and impermanent, and all of us do not know on what day we will leave this world. Facing death, everyone is very negligible. As ephemeral beings, we must always
prepare for death and make life more meaningful. This calm and positive attitude to life will make us more tolerant and respectful to others, it will make us choose wisely, and it will fill our life with fullness, beauty, and sacredness, and thus we will find preciousness and glory in life!
